Religions in Vietnam – A Journey into Spiritual Heritage

Religion in Vietnam is not only about belief — it is part of everyday life, quietly shaping traditions, customs, and community values. You will find it in the gentle scent of incense at family altars, in peaceful temple courtyards, and in the vibrant colors of local festivals celebrated throughout the year.

With Hoa Chan Travel, exploring religion becomes a cultural experience rather than a lesson. From visiting ancient pagodas and churches to learning about ancestor worship and traditional rituals, each encounter offers insight into the spiritual foundations that influence Vietnamese architecture, art, and daily life.

Through these meaningful experiences, you gain a deeper understanding of the harmony, respect, and sense of community that define Vietnamese culture — discovering not only places of worship, but the living traditions that continue to connect generations.

Christianity in Vietnam

Although Western missionaries visited Tonkin briefly in 1533, and Annam in 1596, it was not until 1615 that Portuguese Dominicans founded the first Catholic missions in Hoi An, Danang and Hanoi, marking the beginning of Christianity in Vietnam. The first Vietnamese priests were to be ordained in 1668.

Confucianism

Based on the teachings of Confucius (551-479 BC), Confucianism ( Nho giao or Khong giao , in Vietnamese) is rather than a religion, a political and social morality which dictates to each person their place, their rights and their duties within the family as in society, in order to ensure peace and order.
